From the Bride…
How did you all meet?
We met while we were both engineering students at the University of Maryland. Despite growing up 20 minutes away from each other in Montgomery County, our paths never crossed until summer before our sophomore year, when we both were accepted into an honors program for engineering and business students. All of the new students had to go to a weekend retreat full of icebreakers before the semester started, and we hit it off over trust falls and obstacle courses. We stayed friends for the next year and a half before we decided we wanted to start dating.
What inspired you the most when designing your wedding day?
For our wedding, the most important thing was that the day really be a reflection of who we are as people and partners. We are both super laid back, so we wanted the day to feel relaxed and be effortless for our guests. Also, being that we are relatively international (we currently live in Amsterdam and travel all over the world), we wanted our wedding to have some nods to our love of experiencing other cultures. We used a customized framed wall map as our guest book, and each table was named after a country we’ve traveled to together and had a picture of us in that location.
What made you decide to have your wedding at Shadow Creek?
Since we were planning a wedding from another continent, we did a tremendous amount of research before coming back to look at venues. We were able to narrow our list down to two venues to visit in person, and it wasn’t even remotely a hard choice. As soon as we walked around Shadow Creek, we knew that that’s where we would say our vows, share our first dance, and be surrounded by all of the people we love most.
What was your favorite part of the day?
It’s tough to choose, but for both of us, our ceremony was really personal and special. Our two best friends were the officiants, and they were both endearing and hilarious. We wrote our own vows to say to each other, and everyone laughed and cried our way through the whole ceremony. One of our friends even wrote and read a love poem for us using only lyrics from Beyoncé songs (J is a diehard fan)!
What advice do you have for other couples getting married?
J’s mom gave us the best advice when we started wedding planning- “It’s supposed to be fun. If it stops being fun, reevaluate what you’re doing.” Oh, and have your wedding at Shadow Creek, of course.
